Microsoft Excel: Frozen is cell

I am frozen in a cell, I believe as a result of a key stroke combo including
the shift or cntl key. The scroll lock is not on, but as I move the mouse
around the screen it highlights all surrounding fields.
How do I break out of it'
Even when I have closed ALL excel files (by End task, there is no other
way), when I go back in, the same thing happens.

F8 will get you Extended mode (EXT), or SHIFT+F8 will get you Extended mode (ADD)
which shows up on the status bar and is cleared by hitting F8 once or twice.
